Walking and Cycling in Lincolnshire

Lincolnshire Walks

Lincolnshire is one of the most beautiful and peaceful counties of England. It has lots of open spaces to explore, rolling hills and picturesque villages. Tourists will love discovering the many heritage sites in Lincolnshire and getting a healthy lungful of fresh country air.

Lincolnshire offers visitors and tourists many different ways to enjoy and explore the countryside. Those who love to hike will enjoy wandering along the Viking Way or strolling along the Tennyson Trail. The flatlands, hills and maintained footpaths are perfect for the many walking tours that take place throughout the county.

For the avid cyclists, Lincolnshire has many designated cycle paths through its cities and countryside, allowing you to enjoy your hobby safely wherever you are.

Walking through Lincolnshire

Walking is a great form of exercise. In fact, health practitioners encourage people to walk even if they only have a short distance to travel – like going to school, work or as a recreational activity.

There are many organisations in Lincolnshire that arrange guided walking tours. It is also a good way to meet new people, see the beauty of the county and learn about some of Lincolnshire’s historic sites.

Visitors can choose from the variety of walking tours available. These are:

  • Challenging Walks: This is where you can check out hidden valleys and see what the Lincolnshire Wolds Walking Festival is all about. Or do the Viking Way wherein you will pass through the Wolds Area which winds its way between the Humber Bridge and Rutland.
  • Water Way Trail: This is along the old Lincoln to Boston railway. It is a traffic-free path and the Water Way Trail has distinctive works of art and inspiring sculptures celebrating the life of Alfred Lord Tennyson.
  • Woodland Walks: This walking tour will take you through the Lincolnshire Limewoods, Chambers Farm Wood and Grimsthorpe Park a place where King Henry VIII once hunted deer.
  • City Tour: Also referred to as Cathedral Quarter Walking Tour. This takes you through the heart of Lincoln city.

Cycling Through Lincolnshire

Lincolnshire cycling routes are designed for both the fun, easy rider and the serious cyclist:

  • National Cycle Route: For the more professional cyclists, you can challenge yourself or your family and friends with a long distance Hull-to-Harwich National Cycle Route. This route extends from Barton to Humber to Holbeach in the Lincolnshire Fens.
  • Lincolnshire Wolds Cycle Route: For an easier ride, a gentler path is the best route for you. Enjoy a leisurely ride along the flat county lanes and old bridleways. The Lincolnshire Wolds Cycle Routes offers suitable routes or paths for beginners and more advanced cyclists.
  • For animal lovers:  If you want to do a bit of spotting as they cycle, you will also get the chance to see Lincoln Red Cattle, Lincoln Longwools sheep and Curly Coat pigs on many of the cycle trails available.
  • Spa Trail: A flat surfaced road and bridleway between Horncastle and Woodhall Spa. This path is about 3 miles long and a part of the Viking Way.
  • You can also check out the Lincoln Festival of Cycling when it comes to the city in May
